Climate change is one of the biggest problems that the world is facing today. However, for many people, climate change can feel distant, or even overwhelming. The endless policies, scientific reports, and statistics are all crucial to climate change, but it is often hard for the public to understand. But with modern technology, we have developed a bridge to connect the public to these seemingly distant issues. Through platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, influencers are reshaping the fundamental relationship between a normal citizen and climate change.
Instead of dumping long lists of numbers and letters, these influencers treat the public with short, engaging videos about everything from food waste all the way to plastic pollutants. By using personal experiences and characteristics, influencers shift the public’s perception of climate change from a fact-based, rigid one to a relatable and engaging one. For younger generations, especially, encountering climate issues through social media makes this issue feel much more accessible and relevant.
By growing this sense of accessibility and relevance, climate influencers are able to turn awareness into action. Just like other celebrities who promote certain products, these climate influencers can encourage people to waste less food, use nature-friendly products, or even support environmental organizations. The influencer alone won’t be able to make much of an impact. However, when the small actions of each audience join, big impacts are able to be made in big settings.
However, there are limitations and problems with climate change influencers. Some may oversimplify issues like plastic waste by making it seem like using reusable water bottles is the sole necessary solution to solving this issue. Furthermore, greenwashing is another problem. Although influencers often promote “eco-friendly” products, not all of those products are sustainable. Companies might use words like “green” and “natural” to make people feel like they are making a positive contribution to the planet, when the product actually creates pollution. Therefore, although climate influencers can promote immense positive actions, it is crucial for them and the viewers to fact-check actions and products before further promoting them.
Despite these concerns, influencers play a crucial role in bridging the public a step closer to climate issues. They can make people understand and even care about issues that once felt too distant. They can help people feel less helpless and more involved. And most importantly, they can connect climate issues to everyday life, showing that it affects all aspects of everyone's daily life.
Ultimately, climate change influencers can make a difference. But only if they use their influence and audience responsibly. These influencers hold the power to educate, inspire, and encourage action without the need to force anything out of anyone. Social media alone won’t be able to solve climate change, but it can create a generation that is more informed, aware, and willing to make change in the future.
