Editor-in-Chief’s Note
By Doyoon Lee, Editor-in-Chief (2026–2027)
Throughout my time in Monarch, I have been continuously reminded that student journalism is not about gathering the best journalists or simply sharing information. Rather, it is about being aware of the world around us and building a community where everyone feels empowered to express their unique perspectives.
Monarch is a space where students turn curiosity into conversation, ideas into action, and perspectives into stories that bridge connections across the globe. Like many students, I started with a sense of uncertainty: not knowing if my perspective would matter. Environmental issues always felt too big and distant for me to make a realistic impact. However, Monarch has shown me that every voice and perspective has the potential to make an impact far beyond what I expect.
Through Monarch’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Global) mission, my vision for environmental science has grown beyond exploring the natural world. I’ve encouraged our team to create work that is thoughtful and honest: stories that allow readers to realize the power of their own perspectives and the changes that they can bring to their own lives. Through this process, I’ve come to envision an environmental initiative and a newspaper that leaves a lasting impression long after the final page is turned.
Our team's dedication, creativity, and effort are what give Monarch its identity. Our work does not end when an article is published. With all our proceeds supporting nonprofit organizations, you have the power to turn conversations our team began on the page into real impacts and connections.
As we continue to grow, I hope Monarch remains a place where anyone feels empowered to share their ideas and discover perspectives that resonate with them. Through our work, we hope to show that the final period of an article is never the end of its impact.
